Oman is known as “The Land of Frankincense” yet little is known about the resin or the area it grows. Even though frankincense has been traded for 1000 years before the last Wholly Mammoth walked the lands, it still has not had the attention it deserves.
I started filming frankincense projects in 2024 on an assignment with the Environment Society of Oman. They had a research team working on researching the health and numbers of the frankincense trees in the Dhofar region of Oman.
During that trip, I started discussing with the research team the idea of doing a research trek across the Hojar region of the Jebel Samhan mountains. The research team could do studies on the frankincense population in that area that is inaccessible by car, and I could make a documentary about this ancient trail that has been used for centuries by frankincense harvesters to bring the gift to the world that was worth more than gold at one point.
I want to study the interconnected relationship between humans and trees - looking at the livelihoods that depends on the precious resin, the challenges, the history and the magic of the tough tree itself.
I will be the first woman to trek across the Jebel Samhan ridge the views will be unbelievable for a documentary that could bring positive attention to Oman as an eco-tourism destination. The film can educate an international audience about frankincense as a whole with the help of renowned frankincense researcher Stephen Johnson and his team, and will bring attention to the lesser-known stories about the harvesters and their lives.
Our hopes are to complete this project in 2026-2027 and we are open to sponsors and collaborators to create the best possible project and effective research. Please get in touch.
